Bog garden

Moving round the side of the conservatory, there is a wildlife pond with a bog garden at the edge which contains Ligularia 'Desdemona', a number of Shuttlecock ferns, (Matteuccia struthiopteris), a host of Primula, Ligularia 'Britt Marie Crawford' and the original and largest Salix gracilistyla melanostachys. The pond contains the waterlilies, Nymphaea odorata minor and N. alba.

Next to the wildlife pond is the Koi pool which has two Koi and several Sarrasa Comets and more water lilies, the copper coloured N. 'Sioux' and the larger, white, N. gladstoneana.

At the end of the wild-life pond is a group of acers and a black pine leading down to a small courtyard. The first two, smaller maples are A. palmatum 'Chitoseyama' on the left and A. palmatum 'Shishio' on the right with A. cappadocia rubrum behind it. At the edge of the courtyard is A. sieboldianum and between it and the seat is A. palmatum atropurpureum 'Bloodgood'.

The smaller pots have Acer palmatum 'Kinshi' and A. palmatum 'Kotohime' in them whilst the larger pot at the top of the steps has A. palmatum 'Shigitatsu Sawa'.

The sink to the left of the steps contains a group of small hostas including 'Halcyon', 'Devon Green' and 'June' with H. venusta and 'Blue Mouse Ears' at the front.
